Spirituality

What do we understand by 'Spirituality'?

Spirituality is a core component to ‘living life in all its fullness’ as the mind, body and soul needs to be nurtured equally. It relates to fundamental questions about the meaning and purpose of life which affect everyone and is not dependant on a religious belief. It is also based on the search for ways to answer questions about life and a search for identity.

At Parochial we help children understand spirituality by talking about connection. This means awareness of their relationship with:

Self - being a unique person and understanding self-perception.

Others - how empathy, concern, compassion and other values and principles affect relationships.

The World - perceiving and relating to the physical and creative world through responses to nature and art.

Beyond - relating to the transcendental and understanding experiences and meaning outside the ‘everyday’. For Christians, this is a connection to God as a creator and guide. For others, this may be the sense of the unknown, the infinite or the divine.

Time to Connect
In order to ensure that we protect time for this important part of our children’s development,  we have introduced Time to Connect – a 10 – 15 minute session where all pupils stop to reflect on an image, some music and a bible quote. Pupils are encouraged to think about how the quote makes us feel. It is presented in terms of how a Christian person may feel and how it deepens their connection with God, but for all children we make links to our own feelings, how we are connected to others, the world and ‘beyond’. This is a quiet, peaceful time of reflection which both pupils and staff benefit from at the end of the day.
