Happiness is. . . reading with your child!
Studies have shown the enormous benefits of reading to and with your child throughout primary school and beyond – your child will benefit socially, emotionally and will make impressive strides educationally. But most importantly, they LOVE it!
At Whickham Parochial we are absolutely committed to supporting our children to develop a lifelong love of reading. We want to ask you to help with this by committing to reading a book for pleasure – out loud – to or with your child at least three times each week. Now, we know that spending time reading is its own reward, but we would also like to add a bit of a ‘thank you’ from us to show how much we appreciate it.
We do know that, as children become more independent, they may choose to enjoy reading books by themselves. We want to encourage this too, as this is an important step on the road to a lifelong love of reading. For these children we have our ‘Love or Reading at Home’ log, which works exactly as the other log does.
Every completed reading log that you hand back into school will be recorded, and after five have been handed in your child will receive a chocolate goody and a certificate in assembly. Even more excitingly, every returned log will also become a raffle ticket – with a half termly draw to win family days out in fabulous venues around our region!
Reading logs are available both in the classroom, from the plastic packet under our Reading display in the hall, and at the school office. You can even use the link to the right of this text to download a log at home. There is no limit to how many times you enter into the raffle, so feel free to read as much as you like!

Encouraging Reading for Pleasure in School
At Parochial each teacher works hard to get to know their children’s reading preferences so that we can make the texts they might enjoy readily available. If a child struggles to find a text they enjoy, each class has a Recommendations Tree and recommended books in the book area to choose from.
We have a dedicated Reading Teacher, Mrs Beasley, who is an avid reader herself. She is a champion of reading for pleasure in school and has a vast knowledge of children’s literature to help advise teachers on how to guide and support any less keen readers
